A day in the life of… a Valet Manager

Ellick is our Valet Manager at our Sheffield car dealership and has been with Mike Brewer Motors for 3 and a half years. It’s one of the busiest departments in the dealership, so we caught up with Ellick to find out a bit more about him and what his role entails.

Tell us a bit about what your job involves, and what a typical day is like for you.

First thing in the morning, I’ll check my emails and see if any valets have been added to the valet log overnight. I then have to prioritise the valets on the list against how urgent the cars are and how many valeters I’ve got in on that day, as well as fitting in other jobs such as photo requests from the sales teams who need extra photos of a car for a customer. Part of my job is to organise cars to be collected and delivered back to us if they are at one of our other locations or any manufacturer recalls need completing.

Every day is different, but each day will involve lots of re-prioritising and juggling jobs around. You can come to work in a morning and think the day is organised and planned out, but the priorities will change throughout the day, so you’ve got to be flexible!

We’re a busy team and a busy dealership, but we have very high standards of valeting and we always make the time to give each car the proper preparation attention it deserves. Even though we sell used cars, we try to get the cars back to looking like they’ve had ‘no previous owners’ as best we can. There are 9 valeters in my team with many years of experience between us and I believe we’ve got one of the strongest valet teams in Sheffield.

What do you love most about your job?

I like training people and getting them up to scratch so that they meet my high valet standards! A lot of people think it’s just as simple as washing a car, but there is a lot of skill involved in preparing a car well and it’s a very physically demanding job.

It’s always great to get good feedback from customers who notice the quality of the valet and they’ve appreciated the effort that’s gone into getting their car ready for them.

And what don’t you like?!

The cold!! It can get cold in the wash area, so I’m wearing two layers of thermals today!

Why did you want to work at Mike Brewer Motors?

It’s a well-known name and I knew the dealership had a fantastic reputation. I also wanted to work here because of the progression opportunities. I started off as a Valeter, I quickly moved on to become the Valet Supervisor and I’m now the Valet Manager.

And what do you do outside of work?

I love spending time with my kids and taking them on fun days out. I try to go to the gym a lot too.

Are you into your cars?

Yes, big time!

What would be your dream car to own?

It would have to be a Rolls Royce Phantom!

Do you have any top tips that you would give to someone who is looking to buy a used car?

Do your research on the company and read their reviews. Also, make sure the car has been well looked after and has a full service history.
